  5. Role of politics in development

Politics and development are individually crucial but intersectional elements. Politics play a huge role in the development process. If politics is not in consonance with development than the sustainability of the development process is highly doubtful. Reaching a high level of development is useless if it cannot be maintained. Thus,Sustainability in development is all that counts and politics is crucial for it.

As our former prime minister Manmohan singh said that, we need to develop a broader understanding of the concept of development. Development does not include only quantity or only a single element but is a far more wider concept. It covers many aspects like social, economical, environmental and even human development. The contemporary world has seen many institutions that have a deep understanding of the concept of development and are trying to propound their view to the whole world. The HDI (Human Development Index) by the UNDP (United Nations Development Program), which is an international organisation, is a great example. HDI is a composite statistic of life expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators, which are used to rank countries into four tiers of human development. This can be regarded as measuring the true wealth of the country.

Do you actually believe that you can see growth in a country where education system is poor or there is huge disparity and violent disputes between the  communities or its environmental pollution is crossing its limit, obviously no. Infact if you talk about climate change it has become an all encompassing issue that directly touches upon human development and people's livelihood. Moreover, science is now unequivocal in its assessment that without a proper long term strategy, climate change is going to undermine our development efforts. Who do you think determines these long term strategies? It is the government. It is these political policies which create consonance between social, environmental, economical and human development elements.  This way it guides the development process and keeps a check on all the elements by a framework by proper analytical planning and its implementation so that none of them draws the development process down.

Today at a global level there is now a General recognition that if you don't get the politics part of the Development process right, none of its other parts including economic policies are going to work either. Sustainable development is the path of the future we all want to be a part of. For this we can not ignore any element. It becomes crucial to get an understanding of how these elements are intersectional and how politics is a huge part of it.

Politics and development share a synergistic bond towards each other. Though development is a complex concept but it should not be tackled in isolation from the political dynamics in a country or context.

  8. Hi everyone 🙂
The Role of Politics in Development
Politics and development are highly entangled realities in the progressive discourse of a state-development is its life and politics is its blood. Both cannot survive without each other. No matter which system a state adopts, development will always be at the forefront and politics will always occupy the back-end of its national discourse. Politics is the means while development is the end. But how do the dynamics of both of these concepts play out in the practical world? How does politics affect the developmental process of a country? Is politics the only thing that influences development or is there something more to the picture?
Development is the process of evolution of a society-from primitive to more advanced, from unorganized to more organized, from anarchy to the rule of law and from a tyrannical to a more inclusive society. It facilitates the complete actualization of man's potential in the real world. It has various facets to it-social, political, economic, scientific, environmental, cultural and ethical. When a society a able to evolve a process that can address all these facets of development, it is awarded the title of a successful society.
Politics is an important facet of development that simultaneously influences it besides being influenced by it. Their interaction is a two way process. It is politics that decides the path a country will follow to realize its pursuit of development. Some countries choose to follow democratic system, while others might follow monarchical, autocratic, theocratic or even dictatorial forms of government. All these forms of governance have their own pros and cons, but it is politics that decides which of these forms of governance a society is willing to and will adopt. For example, the push for greater decentralization of powers, participatory governance and women's reservations in the political system are all shaping the political development of India and are greatly shaped by the political dynamics of the country.
Politics also plays a towering role in determining the economic policies a country is willing to adopt. Some countries choose capitalist form of economy, while others might choose socialist or communist or sometimes even mixed form of economy. While economic policies are the circumference, politics is the center of this decision making process and the consequential development that ensues. Many a times, the economic and political philosophies are so deeply entangled that some countries take up the names of developmental philosophies they believe e.g USSR. This points to the magnitude of importance politics assigns to economical development of a country.
Politics also shapes the societal development of country. One can turn the pages of Indian history and see how the societal development was shaped from the ancient times to the medieval, from the Mughal times to the times of British and from the times of unilateral Congress domination to the modern times of coalition politics.Today, politics highly engages in the day to day affairs of the society like health, education, unemployment, poverty, rural and urban development as well as the development of the socially weaker segments of the population. Political governments, their ideologies and manifestos are all formed based on these issues and ultimately it is the political developments that shape the trajectories of these issues in India.
Similarly, politics has a big role to play in the cultural development of the society as well. Recent protests on Jallikattu in Tamilnadu are the examples of this fact. From the preservation of art, architecture and paintings to the naming of various infrastructural creations like airports, highways and roads, politics plays a monumental role in India's politics. It is politics only that epitomizes a particular culture and denigrates another. It is politics only that gives power to the cultural and sectarian identities of the citizens. Hence, politics plays a big role in shaping the cultural development of a country.
Scientific, technological and environmental developments are also shaped by political discourse.Digital India, Make in India and Namami Gange are leading examples of this fact in the Indian scenario. Political ideologies, which are shaped by and in turn shape economic ideologies, equally shape technological and environmental policies also. On the world stage, success of agreements like Paris Agreement, Kyoto Protocol, Montreal Protocol and similar agreements is shaped by the political circumstances of a country.
Similarly, politics greatly influences the ethical and moral development of a country. Legalizing of gay marriages, ban of dowry practices & child marriages, ban on untouchabiltiy or abortions and political fight against drug menace in Philippines are the living examples of this fact. Politics greatly affects the ethical mindset of a country as ethics and morality follow a top-down model. These principles flow from leaders to their followers and hence play a great role in shaping the ethical development of a country.
Therefore, we can conclude that politics hugely contributes in the developmental process of a country. Without politics, development is a virtual goal. With politics, development becomes a reality on the ground. Hence, politics is the vehicle which seeks to reach the destination of development. Hence, both are intricately co-dependent on each other and simultaneously influence each other. Focus should be towards sustainable development -'Sustainable development is the pathway to the future we want for all. It offers a framework to generate economic growth, achieve social justice, exercise environmental stewardship and strengthen governance'.

    Thankyou for reading 🙂

  10. The role of politics in development

Politics has been there in India since independence and is evolving since then. We have seen the starting years after independence, the domination of single party to the starting of coalition parties since 1978. Th book ' the coalition year 1997-2016' is based on same.

With the coming of politics in the form of democracy, people have become active in political life as well as politically aware about their rights. This has helped the citizens or people in overall development including social, economic, religious areas.

The inclusion of people in Rajya Sabha from various fields as nominated by the president is also a positive step as it afds to the multidimensional aspect to the Rajya Sabha. People who are expert in different areas contribute to the politics of our country.

Due to rise of regional parties, various issues of welfare are raised in elections and this leads to the improvement in existing policies for the people. The loopholes in the policies of one party is fulfilled by the opposition parties in the form of constructive criticism and when these opposition parties occupy power, they fill the gap in existing policies leading to the welfare of the people

In this way India has gradually emerged as the large democracy in the world and will continue to be such with the participation of the people of its country.
