Salt is a basic necessity for all and touches everyone be it hindu or muslim, rich or poor, Bengali or Gujarati. British Indian government had monopoly in its production and distribution. Taxing it is more like taxing heavily on the air we breath and water we use. Gandhi cleverly took an emotional issue as the first step in the long waited civil disobedience movement to mobilize and unite every section of the society by clearly depicting the alien nature.
