  2. I m from Assam….we dnt like both Assamese and bengali languages…we have our own Mother Tongue…We want choice Hindi language instead of Assamese and bengali languages. In assam only 33.99% are Assamese Majority…34.22% are Muslim majority….others are bengali and tribal Community like BODO KACHARI, DIMASA KACHARI, KARBI, RABHA etc. They have their own mother tongue.Assam is not only for assamese.

  3. Gujarati Hindi ke kai alphabets milte hai, words bhi milte par dono ko unicode alag hai. Hindi se kai language ke alphabet milte hai unka bhi unicode alag. To Assamese ko language ka darza dene me dikkat kya hai?

  4. ei bilag sob bangladeshi,r karone hoi ase aru most of them are muslim and they speak bangali ,people thinks they're bangali but actually they're not ….aru eta kotha we gave nightmare to the mughal now days ulta hoi ase ….man we should throw em out before too late

  5. As two sub species diverge and become separate species, so do two dialects and become separate languages. As of today, an average Assamese understands standard Bengali with some effort, and likewise an average Bengalee understands standard Assamese. In other words they haven't diverged enough yet, and are linguistically the same language, official status notwithstanding. Note that almost all Bengali dialects spoken on the eastern side of the Padma River are closer to standard Assamese than standard Bengali. The issue here is more about cultural identity. Bengali continues to be rooted in Pali with some significant reinforcement of Sanskrit, while Assamese has some Tibeto-Burman influence. The change of river courses of the Ganga, the Kosi and the Brahmaputra in the 12th century resulted in the very wide rivers in present day Bangladesh. Bakhtiyar Khaljee and team used the navigable waters fully, and the dialect of this middle region stared assimilating Persian words into it. The linguistic and cultural rift between the Bengali on its west and the Assamese on its east widened. But that's not all. As travel became easier, people always moved for better employment, and populations got mixed up. Roll forward few hundred years. By then the British had conquered Nawab-ruled Bengal and had taken over Assam after repelling the Burmese who had come to occupy Ahom. The British needed some English educated clerks and managers for their tea estates and other interests in Assam. People from Calcutta moved in. In fact, people moved freely within the Bengal-Assam area (including present day Bangladesh) in search of jobs. It was the same province then. Did it matter? Enter Cyril Radcliffe in 1947. East Pakistan was carved out on the basis of religion. Certain Barak Valley districts in the east that had a Hindu majority, and identified themselves as speakers of Bengali, joined Assam. Several other Assamese districts also had a significant Bengali population. Now, I am old enough to recollect that as per my primary school social study books, Assam was officially a bilingual state. But, there were many others, Garo, Khashi and Jaintia tribes to name a few. So, Assam got divided further. But people from different languages and cultures continued to inhabit the borders of present day Assam. Let's add migration from Bangladesh into the mix (both Hindus and Muslims), first for West Pakistani oppression and then for poverty. Obviously refugees are not welcome anywhere. But, did that happen only towards Assam? OK, Indira Gandhi quickly gave them voting rights for her own benefit. Fair enough. But what about the violence that took over the state? Is there any report or statistics on the flight of non-Bangladeshi Bengalees who called Assam their home and lived there for generations? You need to ask those families how they used to be summoned every now and then to the police station to prove their residency status (think pre-Aadhar – ration cards, board exam admit cards etc). When Rajiv Gandhi suddenly became the Prime Minister, one of the first things he did was sign the Assam Accord with Prafulla Mahanta and team. That defined who is an Assamese Proper. What continues to happen since then is a course of natural progression.

  11. Copperplates of Bhuti Barman and Bhaskar Barman establishes that Assamese language originated before 4th century AD. Excavations in Surya Pahar in Goalpara, Assam have pushed back this date of the Assamese language or ancient Kamrupi script from which it is evolved to 2nd century AD which proves that it is more antiquated than Bengali language. A few alphabets of Assamese language Ro and Wabo having triangular features sets it apart from other scripts such as Bengali, Oriya, Maithali etc
The idea of Bengali language and identity are relatively new. The first native name for Bengali was Gauda Bhasha coming into use around 15-16 th century. In 19th century the new name Vanga-bhasa or Bangla bhasha came into existence. Raja Ram Mohan Roy, the first Bengali to write a grammar of his mother tongue called his work Gaudiya Vyakarana, meaning grammer of the Gaudiya language. It was published in the year 1826.
And for those who are screaming what did we do? Well we defeated the Mughals 17 times. All wars won through guerilla tactics. Nobody was able to capture our land till 1826 when the British came. Show us another equivalent achievement from any other part of India.

  12. From Programmer's point of view, backward compatibility is at utmost importance. You can't just change all Assamese or Bengali documents on web overnight. So, you get "Assamese-Bengali character set" as union of Assamese character set and Bengali character set. I think It's a win-win for all concern parties.
