The first tier of IES consists of 5 papers where 3 are objective and 2 are conventional. After clearing the written examination of ies, you get to appear in the personality tests with some IES officers and the other such tests which gives you the combined merit list on the basis of which you get selected.

What is the eligibility criteria for the IES examination?
To appear for the UPSC examination, all you need is a degree which can be in any department or branch. There are only 4 departments in which IES is held, i.e, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and Electronic. You can have a degree in anything. There is no % benchmark being set. You score a minimum of 50% and you can sit for the IES exam.
There are 5 papers in IES EXAM out of which, the first one is General Ability which includes English and GS.
Then comes the IES Paper 1: Technical comprising of 5-6 subjects again which will consist of objective and conditional questions. The entire examination is over 3 days. The first day is of general studies, the second day is of the 2 objective papers which includes the entire engineering course being tested in 2 hours. The third or last day is of Paper-I Conventional 1st of 3 hours and then after a gap of 2 hours will be Paper-I Conventional 2nd in the same day.

What does the IES Personal Interview consist of?
After the written round, you are called in for a personal interview. At first, the UPSC Interviewer may ask you any question about yourself, the current affairs, about your field etc. It depends on him purely. After that, the other 3 technical experts question you about anything technical and related to your field.
