Meet UPSC CSE (IAS) 2016 rank 263 Kanchal Kumar Kandpal in this video introduction and interview by DrishtiIAS. Only twenty-three years old, Kanchan Kumar Kandpal secured selection in his first attempt at the Civil Services Examination. Kanchan hails from Haldwani in Uttarakhand. Kanchan was successful after preparing for the UPSC for a year after he completed his engineering studies.  

Kanchan did his schooling from Nainital; he was prodigiously talented in debates and anchoring during his formative years of education. He was also a radio jockey at PantNagar Janwani (Uttarakhand) and was a local favourite in that area. Kanchan was also a state topper in his plus two exams; his home was full of awards and medals given his extraordinary abilities.
UPSC TOPPER KANCHAN, AN INSPIRATION FOR HINDI AND VERNACULAR MEDIUM STUDENTS
Kanchan is an inspiration for Hindi medium students who want to achieve success at the USPC IAS as well as State Services Examinations, especially for states like Uttarakhand, Bihar, UP and others. Kanchan did his schooling from Bhartiya Shaheed Sainik Vidyalyaa, Nainital. His score in plus two exam was over 95 per cent which is still a record in his region. His school principal still vouches for abilities that must have led to his successes in the civil services examination. 
MOTIVATED TO CLEAR THE CIVIL SERVICES IN FIRST ATTEMPT
Kanchan says that he was motivated to clear the exam in the first attempt: it was his goal to crack IAS at first attempt! He was also confident about clearing the IAS exam despite his young age and inexperience in this examination system. He started formal preparation after his B.Tech exams held in June, 2015. He felt that there was not much scope for preparation in Uttarakhand and he chose to come to Delhi (‘mecca’ of civil service preparation and coaching) for better chances at the examination. Kanchan chose to appear for the civil services exam as a career goal because he wanted some sort of ‘intellectual satisfaction from his job. 
CIVIL SERVICES TO HELP PEOPLE AND SOCIETY 
He also says that what motivated to pursue civil services was that he had seen people in his hilly, mountainous area of Bagheshwar (hometown district) struggling with day to day life; he wanted to solve problems of the society. He wanted to help the people and the civil services provided the platform for it. Furthering art and culture (lok sanskriti ko aage badhana), samasya suljhana (problem solving) is something that came naturally to him as a radio jockey, debate participant, Engineering student and CS aspirant later. Kanchan also frankly admits that his engineering course was a sort of backup plan (plan B) as the UPSC IAS exam is also unpredictable. 
HOW TO PREPARE FOR IAS EXAM
Kanchan says that the IAS exam is not a walk in the park and that he was aware of the huge challenge from the start. He says that he may have started preparation from September 2015 but he had already studied and oriented himself toward the civil service exam and its syllabus in his education years at school. For example, he had studied the NCERT books whole heartedly which are important for the exam; also, he was good at debating and it helped in his essay paper preparation (whereas many students have to prepare for the Essay paper for months). Answer writing practice was an important strategy of his preparation and before the PT (preliminary exam) he used to write 4-5 answers daily as practice for the IAS exam.
