New Delhi, Aug. 10: One of the last acts of Pranab Mukherjee in Rashtrapati Bhavan was to overturn a decision by IIT Kharagpur to impose compulsory retirement on a whistleblower professor who has been hailed as an “unsung hero” by the Supreme Court, it has emerged now.

Mukherjee had signed the file on Rajeev Kumar, a computer science professor, a few days before he demitted office as the President last month. The President is the Visitor or the highest authority of all the IITs. The file reached the human resource development ministry earlier this month.

The IIT had suspended Kumar in May 2011 for “misconduct” – the same year the Supreme Court had applauded the professor for his efforts to reform the IIT Joint Entrance…
