Reflection at a Plane Surface – Optics: IIT JEE Main and Advanced Physics Video Lecture by BM Sharma

Topics included in this chapter are given below:
Laws of reflection:
————————-
1. Angle of incidence is always equal to the angle of reflection.

2. Incident ray, reflected ray and normal at the point of incidence lie in the same plane.

An image is formed when our brain “back projects” the reflected ray.

The space in front of mirror is called real space because in this space light rays actually exist after reflection. Images formed in this space are real images. The space behind the mirror is virtual space because in this space light rays actually do not exist. Images appear to be forming in this space are virtual images. Therefore in case of a plane mirror, the image formed is always virtual.

Properties of the image
———————————
a) The image formed in plane mirror is virtual, erect, of same size that of object and latterly inverted (left in front of left and right in front of right)

b) The height of the mirror required to see one’s full image: From the adjoining diagram it is clear that height of the plane mirror required to see one’s full image is half of one’s own height. The top level of mirror should be at the middle of top of head and eye level. This fact is independent of the distance between observer and mirror.

c) Rotation of a plane mirror: When a plane mirror is turned through an angle Ø the reflected ray turns through an angle 2Ø.

d) Number of images formed between two mirrors inclined at an angle Ø
