Sign Convention in Beam [Axial Force, SFD &BMD) (Bangla)
1. For a cross section of a beam when axial force is ‘tension’ then it is positive and when it is ‘compression’ then the sign convention is negative.
2.1. For a cross sectional cut for left side internal force is considered as downward and right side internal force is upward then it is called positive shear. In this case the external force at left side will be upward which nullify the internal force to maintain the balance of the beam and external force at right side will be downward for the same reason.
2.2. For a cross sectional cut for left side internal force is considered as upward and right side internal force is downward then it is called negative shear. In this case the external force at left side will be downward which nullify the internal force to maintain the balance of the beam and external force at right side will be upward for the same reason.
3.1. For the case 2.1 it makes a anti clockwise moment at left side and clockwise moment at right side. Consequently the bending will be sagging that means positive.
3.2. For the case 2.2 it makes a clockwise moment at left side and anti clockwise moment at right side. Consequently the bending will be Hogging that means negative.
