I managed a career change from technology consulting to mergers and acquisitions. Two completely unrelated fields.
And I was able to do this despite having 10 years of experience before I went back to bschool.
At MBA Crystal Ball, a lot of folks we’ve helped, have gone on to change their careers as well.
So it’s surely a legitimate expectation to have.
However, before the euphoria comes a LOT of pain. I’ll share a few basic principles for you to keep in mind. It’ll make the entire process a little more structured and a little less frustrating.
A career change could come in various shapes and forms.
It could be an industry change: For instance, from IT to Strategy Consulting, from retail banking to investment banking, from manufacturing to real estate.
Or it could be a role change: from a technical job to a functional or managerial role.
Or it could be a location change: moving from India to Canada, but in a similar role and industry.
Or it could be a complete transition of industry, role AND geography.
