Common Admission Test or CAT is a Computer based entrance Exam for admissions into management courses in Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other top B-schools of the country. The regulating body/exam authority is the IIM and every year different IIMs conduct the CAT exam on a rotational basis.

Though CAT is considered to be a tough entrance exam, the key to succeeding it, is with time management and learning the tricks and shortcut techniques which help to ace the exam.

Eligibility Criteria for CAT 2017:
You need to have
• A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification (recognized by HRD Ministry, Government of India) with a minimum of 50%. For candidates belonging to SC/ST/PwD category, the minimum score is 45%)
• Candidates appearing for final exams in 2017 are also eligible to take up CAT. But the necessary documents have to be submitted before June 30, 2017.

Application Form for CAT 2017: The application for CAT 2017 will be released on the official website. The application fees have to be paid for the further processing, which is 1700 for General and OBC and INR 850 for reserved categories.
Like every year, CAT 2017 will be conducted in the month of December

CAT 2017 – Exam Pattern: CAT exam is conducted in an online mode, i.e., computer-based. The duration of CAT 2017 is 3 hours (180 minutes). A total of 100 questions are asked from 3 sections viz,
• Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning
• Quantitative Ability
• Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension
The candidates are credited with 3 marks for every correct answer and minus 1 mark for each incorrect response. No marks will be provided or deducted for the un-attempted question.

What is the ideal time to start preparing for CAT?
This is the question which haunts a lot of people, but actually it’s really simple to see. There are four cases: –
• Good at Maths & VA – You can prepare for CAT in 3-4 months, start in July/August and give a study time of 3-4 hours on weekdays and 7-8 hours on weekends religiously.
• Good at Maths only – Prepare in 6 months time. You need to put in extra effort on VA. Start your preparation around March/April and give a study time of 3-4 hours on weekdays and 7-8 on weekends religiously.
• Good at VA only – Start preparing 9 months in advance. Around Dec/Jan is the ideal time. Same study time.
• Not good at either – Start preparing 1 year early. Preferably in September/October the previous year. Same study time.

To prepare well for this section, the following things are recommended: –
1. Read Newspaper daily Like The Hindu or Times of India
2. Read the Supreme Court issued statements of cases which lie in your area of interest like the recent removal of BCCI President Anurag Thakur.
3. Read some good books like Word Power made easy by Normal Lewis.
4. Try to incorporate new words in your daily language.
5. Practice Reading.
6. Learn and Practice Grammar
7. For Maths/ Quantitative Aptitude we would recommend:
• Learn the Basics of all maths topics
• Practice each topic from previous year papers and Mock Tests.
• When you will practice, you would then be required to learn some short tricks for faster calculation.
8. For Data Interpretation you must be habituated with all kinds of charts. From charts , graphs etc. you will need to extract information.
9. Logical Reasoning : – In order to score well in this section, it is vitally important that you dont create any assumptions related to any question
10. Always read the sentences unbiased and never assume anything unless it is stated.
11. Vitally important to practice this section from the previous year.
12. Your ability to comprehend the passage should be very good and for that you must practice reading short English passages and solving their questions.
13. Practice and practice lots of Mock test papers.
