For those who dream of the hallowed halls of business schools, the GMAT or Graduate Management Admission Test is the first step toward making it a reality. Over 6,100 graduate management programs worldwide, including top schools like Harvard, Wharton and Stanford, use GMAT test results to assess applications. (See also: When Is an MBA Worth It?)

In testing year 2016, which ran from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016, a total of 261,248 GMAT exams were taken by prospective business school students globally, according to GMAC, the organization that administers the test. The mean score of those test takers was 558 out of a maximum of 800, 11 points more than the 2016 U.S. average score. A total of 42 countries had higher mean scores than the U.S….
