Domain. The domain of a function is the complete set of possible values of the independent variable. In plain English, this definition means:
The domain is the set of all possible x-values which will make the function “work”, and will output real y-values.
Determine the domain and range of the function above. To determine the domain, identify the set of all the x-coordinates on the function’s graph.
To determine the range, identify the set of all y-coordinates. In addition, ask yourself what are the greatest/least x- and y-values
The domain is the set of all first elements of ordered pairs (x-coordinates). The range is the set of all second elements of ordered pairs (y-coordinates).
Only the elements “used” by the relation or function constitute the range
To find the domain, solve the inequality 4 – x 0. x 4. Thus, all numbers less than or equal to 4 represent the domain for this function.
When trying to find the domain and range from a graph, the domain is found by looking at the graph from left to right.
