The decision of Christian Medical College, Vellore, to leave 99 of 100 MBBS seats vacant this year rather than admit students from centralized counseling based on the NEET rank list reflects the difficulties that emerge while following a one size fits all policy. CMC Vellore was at the forefront of challenging the NEET claiming that it was a minority institution and should have autonomy in admissions. It followed a pattern where 84 seats were in a “sponsored category” to which various Christian and church groups could recommend candidates. Only 16 were in the open category.
