Whenever there is a protest , one thing we find is the internet shutdown. There have been 55 internet shutdown till now in 2017. Recently Gujarat High Court invoked section 144 of Criminal procedure code to uphold an internet shutdown.
The reason for the same includes diverting the attention of the protesters, and to maintain law and order.
However if close analysis is given we find that the internet shutdown has many legal and ethical implications like:
– violates the fundamental Right of citizen as it curbes the freedom of expression.
– ‎the education of students living in such areas is affected.
– ‎other services like banking, medical and basic necessities are affected
To solve this problem other solutions can be looked upon as
Increasing the security of an area where protest is expected to happen
Extend the curfew in the area
And the most feasible solution involves solving public grievances because suppression can't last longer than a limit.
Shutdown of Internet only provides a temporary solution to a problem. Living in 21st century internet has now become part and parcel of common man's life either directly or indirectly.

There has been a saying “with great power comes great responsiblity”. Thus its upon us how we use that power.
Digitalization has become the spjne of contemproary society but its being used for malpractices too.

➡️ Indeed internet has become the greatest way to express your thoughts in indispensible manner.
➡️On the one hand, internet is the door to greater oppurtunities but 9n the other hand, its has been missused heavily.

Legal perspective:
➡️ Infringes the Freedom of Speech and Expression
➡️Infringes upon Right to assembly and peaceful protest
➡️ It acts like article 144 upon Digital Platform, this British era law is itlelf supressive in nature.

Ethical perspective
➡️ It intensevely obstruct Right to education for students.
➡️ Damage daily basis buissnesses.
➡️ Restrict people to communicate.

It is understandable that certain times authorities have no option but to impose restrictions to protect the greater interest of citizens but there should be some laws which should policize these restrictions. For ex…
1 Time limit should be there for restrictions
2 Govt should restrain from using such tools. This should be the last tool.
3 There should be some policies during the restrictions which could give limited access to internet to students for studies purposes and to buisnessman for work.
